             My family began supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation four years ago when my great nephew, Chace of Fresno, California, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the tender age of nearly 2 years old.  With the support of his family and friends, he is adapting to the burdens that this disease imposes.   For Chace and all others with Diabetes, I have chosen JDRF as the recipient of my 2007 Giving Design Donations.

             Rufus, the Bear with Diabetes, was created by Carol Cramer, whose son Brian was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in 1994 at the age of three.  Now, each child who is diagnosed with Diabetes receives a Rufus or Ruby Bear.  With Carol’s blessings, I put Rufus in this playful and happy scene.  Kids with Diabetes know who Rufus is, to everyone else, he’s just a sweet little guy that any child would fall in love with.

             Founded by parents of children with juvenile diabetes, JDRF has one mission: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.  To learn more about the accomplishments of this organization, please visit their website.

     The 2006 Giving Design is in Memory of my friend, Paula Lindquist (1933-2005). We solved the world’s problems in every visit and shared our hopes and dreams. When I wanted to visit, I’d say “ I need a Paula fix” and when she wanted to visit, she’d say, “I need a Sandy fix”.

     Paula would be very pleased with this project, not because it is in her honor, but because it will help others, as hers was a giving soul. Though visually impaired for most of her adult life, Paula taught Sunday School and was very involved in the vocal department at her church for 35 years. “I can’t see well, but I can still hear”, she’d say.

     She met the challenge and fought the fight…This is my final Paula Fix.
